Iconic Beer Brand To Shift Production From Canada To U.S.

Sapporo Breweries Ltd., a Japanese beer company, is moving the production of its non-alcoholic beer for the U.S. market from Canada to the United States due to high tariffs on Canadian beer exports.

The decision is linked to new U.S. tariffs of 50% on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, which took effect on August 22, 2026.

Sapporo currently produces its Sapporo 0.0% beer in Canada through its subsidiary, Sleeman Breweries, which operates four breweries in Canada.

Chief Strategy Officer Rieko Shofu mentioned that production will relocate by the first half of 2027, with potential expansion on the U.S. West Coast.

While Sapporo is planning this shift, Sleeman clarified that the relocation is not yet finalized and represents a small portion (0.5%) of its total Canadian production.

Sapporo has already made changes to its U.S. operations, designating its Richmond, Virginia plant as the core production site for the Sapporo brand and ceasing production at another plant.

The shift in production is part of Sapporo's response to significant tariff impacts and aims to enhance its position in the U.S. market while maintaining commitments to Canadian breweries.
