Duke Medical School Discriminated Against White and Asian Applicants, US Government Says

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has found that Duke University School of Medicine discriminated against white and Asian applicants during its admissions process. This information comes from a year-long investigation revealing significant disparities in admission rates, grades, and standardized test scores between racial groups.

The investigation indicated that Duke's medical school had intentionally discriminated against white and Asian applicants by using race-based criteria in admissions.

Admission rates for black and Hispanic applicants were two to three times higher than for white and Asian applicants, despite the latter groups generally having better academic records.

Specifically, 3.3% of white applicants and 3.4% of Asian applicants were accepted, compared to 10.0% of black applicants and 6.7% of Hispanic applicants.

The findings come after a Supreme Court decision in 2023 that ruled racial discrimination in admissions unconstitutional.

Duke University could face serious consequences, including the potential loss of tax-exempt status and federal funding.

Additional investigations into Duke Law School suggest similar discriminatory practices, with evidence that race greatly affected admission probabilities.

Duke's School of Medicine has claimed that race does not influence admissions since the Supreme Court's ruling, yet internal documents revealed intentions to maintain race-based admissions criteria.
