Two noncitizens from New Jersey, Patrick Terrence Reid and Danubis Bernat, have been charged with illegally voting in federal elections and making false statements while applying for U.S. citizenship.
Reid, a Jamaican national, and Bernat, a Venezuelan national, both allegedly registered to vote while falsely claiming to be U.S. citizens.
Reid is accused of voting in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections, while Bernat allegedly voted in person in the 2024 election.
Both claimed on their citizenship applications they had never registered to vote.
A recent report indicated approximately 6,600 noncitizens were erroneously registered to vote due to a software error in the Department of Motor Vehicles.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill mentioned that the state is working to remove noncitizens from voter rolls but has not provided comprehensive voter record information.
Republicans have proposed the SAVE America Act to amend voting registration laws, requiring proof of citizenship to prevent noncitizen voting.
The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding noncitizen voting and calls for legislative changes to enhance election integrity in New Jersey and nationwide.
