The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided funding for pro-vaccine podcasts aimed at promoting COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. The podcasts, created in partnership with nonprofit organizations, focus on increasing public confidence in vaccines rather than presenting balanced discussions on vaccine policies.
The CDC funded pro-vaccine content through grants, with disclosures often buried in reports and episode footers, making them hard for average listeners to notice.
Two major projects received a total of $5.755 million. Topics covered in the podcasts included building vaccine trust and addressing skepticism among community members.
The podcast series "REACHing for Vaccine Equity," produced by the Association of Immunization Managers, featured eight episodes in 2023 and aimed to improve vaccine confidence, particularly in rural and Hispanic/Latino communities.
A second series, "At the Core of Care," produced by the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium, incorporated 16 episodes showcasing nurses as trusted sources for vaccine information.
The educational content included discussions on using local figures like church leaders and social media influencers to spread positive vaccine messages and combat misinformation.
The CDC has taken an active role in shaping public perception of vaccines by funding media initiatives designed specifically to promote vaccination, reflecting a clear objective to enhance vaccine confidence across various communities.
