An investigation by conservative journalists in Minneapolis revealed significant vulnerabilities in Minnesota's voter vouching system during the state’s primary election. The undercover team tested the system by attempting to vote under false identities.
Minnesota permits same-day voter registration without requiring identification if a registered voter vouches for the individual's residency. One voter can vouch for up to eight others.
Undercover journalists, including James O'Keefe, dressed as Muslims and tested whether they could vote in the names of unregistered individuals. They found poll workers willing to vouch for others without verification of their identities.
At multiple polling locations, they encountered election workers who allowed O'Keefe to vouch for unregistered voters without asking for any identification.
O’Keefe impersonated a registered voter and was given the go-ahead to vouch for up to eight individuals, reinforcing the lack of identity verification in the system.
Another worker confirmed that registered voters did not need to provide ID while vouching, stating, “You’re the I.D.”
Some poll workers grew suspicious of the journalists’ actions and raised concerns over their radios, indicating variability in how election procedures were enforced.
