In Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced that her office has charged multiple individuals for voting-related offenses in the November 2024 election. These include five noncitizens and one U.S. citizen involved in registering a noncitizen to vote.
Five noncitizens have been charged with offenses related to voting in the 2024 election. Their status includes lawful permanent residents and a resident from the United Kingdom, none of whom are U.S. citizens.
The charges include making false statements on absentee ballots, fraudulent registration, election law forgery, perjury, and attempting to vote illegally. The potential penalties for these actions range from 90 days in jail to several years in prison.
Throughout 2025, the Michigan Department of State reported 16 cases of suspected noncitizen voting to the Attorney General’s office. An additional 22 cases were referred in 2026 involving voting from 2009 to 2025.
Of the total of 38 cases reviewed, six resulted in criminal charges, ten were closed without charges, and 22 remain under investigation.
All voter registrations linked to the identified noncitizen voters have been canceled.
Attorney General Nessel emphasized the importance of maintaining election integrity and prosecuting those who violate voting laws. She noted the challenges in some cases due to limited access to federal citizenship records.
The Michigan Attorney General’s office is actively addressing suspected noncitizen voting to uphold the integrity of elections. The ongoing reviews and investigations aim to ensure that all voting practices comply with legal standards.
