The Pentagon has disclosed the recovery of classified documents relevant to the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. This announcement is made on the fifth anniversary of a significant tragedy during the withdrawal.
Sean Parnell, a spokesperson for the Pentagon’s Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel, revealed that relevant documents were hidden and not disclosed when they should have been.
The documents contain critical information about the withdrawal process that had been stashed away in safes.
The special review panel, founded by War Secretary Pete Hegseth, is conducting interviews with military personnel and reviewing around 9 million documents to understand the decisions made during the withdrawal.
Parnell promised clarity to service members involved in the withdrawal, stating that the investigation would pursue the truth without filtering it for convenience.
Earlier Pentagon reviews noted that some materials related to the withdrawal remained classified, indicating potential ongoing issues with transparency.
