UN’s Disgraceful Moral Equivalency Regarding the U.S.-Iran Conflict

On July 12, 2023, U. N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over escalating military confrontations in the Gulf, blaming both the U. S. and Iran. He urged them to engage in diplomatic negotiations.

● The U. S. has pursued peaceful conflict resolution and established a favorable Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Iran.

● Iran breached its commitment regarding navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased military responses from the U. S.

● Iran continues to assert its control over the Strait and has attacked shipping vessels, despite U. S. efforts to ensure safe passage for commercial ships.

● The U. N. supports free movement in the Strait but holds both nations equally responsible for current tensions, criticized as a lack of moral clarity.

● Iran's demands for a "peaceful" resolution include complete control of the Strait, limitations on nuclear programs, removal of sanctions, and unfreezing of assets, which are deemed unacceptable by the U. S.

The U. S. believes in achieving peace through strength rather than through appeasement, highlighting the complexities surrounding U. S.-Iran relations and maritime security in the region.
