Saudi Arabia has successfully restored its East-West oil pipeline, known as the petroline, which allows crude oil to flow directly to the Red Sea, bypassing the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
• The petroline is a 1,200 km (approximately 750 miles) pipeline that runs from Abqaiq to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, with the capacity to pump 7 million barrels of oil per day.
• This restoration allows Saudi Arabia to avoid reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for oil transportation.
• The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is also utilizing this pipeline and has its own pipeline that runs to the Gulf of Oman, known as the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline (ADCOP), which has a capacity of 1.5 to 1.8 million barrels per day.
• Recent expansions have allowed the petroline to reach full operational capacity, establishing a temporary shipping hub at Yanbu.
• However, there are still risks, including potential drone and missile attacks, as highlighted by an incident in early April.
The completion of the petroline enhances Saudi Arabia’s ability to export oil while mitigating the risks associated with shipping through Hormuz, although some vulnerabilities remain.
