Marco Rubio and America Alone

Marco Rubio’s recent speech at the Munich Security Conference has drawn attention for its insights into America’s role in Western civilization. While he received praise for his delivery and content, there are critical distinctions in his understanding of the historical and philosophical foundations of the West that need to be addressed.

1. Praise for Rubio’s Address:

• Many conservatives and independents found Rubio's remarks compelling and knowledgeable.

• His speech effectively articulated the significance of Western civilization and America's leadership role.

2. Misconceptions of the Enlightenment:

• Rubio mistakenly presents the Enlightenment as a uniform movement.

• The Enlightenment is more accurately divided into four distinct segments: English, French, Scottish, and German. Each had different focuses—some on reform and gradual change, while others promoted radical ideas.

3. Historical Roots of Liberty:

• Rubio claims that the “seeds of liberty” originated in Europe, but they were actually planted much earlier in ancient Israel.

• The English and Scottish Enlightenments, key to the American Revolution, built upon these ancient ideas. They did not entirely break from earlier moral foundations.

4. Contrast with Continental Thought:

• On the continent, Rousseau's philosophies significantly diverged from the Enlightenment ideals held by the American Founders.

• Rousseau's view of the state and “general will” has been instrumental in shaping leftist ideologies over the past 250 years.

5. Modern Implications:

• Current political figures, like Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, reflect Rousseau's influence rather than traditional Western values, showcasing a disconnect with the original ideas that shaped America.

• This led to the conclusion that despite some cultural similarities, the historical and philosophical paths of America and Europe now widely differ.

6. America's Position:

• The unity once shared between Europe and the U. S. is now fragile, with a common vision nearly non-existent.

• Efforts for reconciliation with Europe must occur on terms favorable to America to protect its foundational principles.

Rubio’s speech highlights the critical role America plays as a defender of Western civilization. However, understanding the complex historical, philosophical, and cultural differences between America and Europe is vital. While striving for harmony is admirable, it is crucial that this effort respects America's unique values and heritage. Ultimately, America stands alone in preserving the core principles of Western civilization, as the traditional foundations have eroded in Europe.
