VA Compiling List of Non-Citizen Workers

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is establishing a new internal database to track non-U. S. citizens associated with the agency. This includes doctors, nurses, contractors, trainees, and veterans. A memo indicates that the VA is requiring offices nationwide to identify all non-citizen employees and affiliates by December 30.

Some of this data will be shared with other federal agencies for immigration enforcement. A VA spokesperson reassured that only unauthorized immigrants should be concerned, emphasizing that legally authorized individuals have nothing to worry about.

The memo's broad language may affect anyone working within the VA, raising concerns among some congressional Democrats about potential recruitment challenges amidst staffing shortages. Critics argue the initiative could deter foreign medical professionals, impacting patient care, while the VA maintains that morale concerns are unfounded.

This action is part of a larger push by the Trump administration to enhance data sharing with federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security. The VA has not confirmed whether this information will be directly shared with DHS or ICE.
