Why we must change the way we pay teachers - and get back to traditional reading methods.

There is growing concern about the decline in public education in the U. S. Recent data shows that many school districts are losing students and public dissatisfaction with education quality is at an all-time high. To address these issues, changes in teacher compensation and reading instruction methods are necessary.

1. Enrollment Decline:

Nine out of ten of the largest school districts have seen a drop in student numbers since the 2019-20 school year. A Gallup poll indicates that adult dissatisfaction with public education rose from 62% to 73% from 2019 to 2025.

2. Teacher Compensation:

Education must shift from fixed teacher salaries to a merit-based system where teachers are rewarded for performance. Currently, teachers’ pay does not reflect their effectiveness due to union structures. Wisconsin's Act 10 illustrates the positive impact of merit pay, showing a significant increase in teacher quality after its implementation.

3. Successful Models:

The Washington D. C. IMPACT system and the Dallas Independent School District’s performance-based compensation have improved teacher quality and student performance in standardized tests.

4. Reading Instruction Methods:

The traditional “science of reading” focusing on phonics should replace ineffective teaching fads. Louisiana serves as a successful model, improving its reading scores significantly by returning to basic teaching methods and mandating science of reading training for early-grade teachers.

Transforming teacher pay structures and returning to effective reading instruction methods can lead to better educational outcomes, restoring confidence in the public education system. This two-pronged approach is essential for enhancing the quality of education in America.
