Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is shifting towards the political right and announced changes to the fact-checking system on Instagram and Facebook. Outgoing President Joe Biden criticized this move, calling it "shameful. " He said Zuckerberg is "walking away from fact-checking" by removing third-party fact-checkers and replacing them with a Community Notes system. Biden expressed concerns about the lack of reporting on discrimination regarding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for unsafe immigrant countries.
Biden emphasized the importance of telling the truth and questioned the implications of allowing false information to spread widely. He found it unacceptable that a billionaire could decide not to fact-check any content, which he described as shameful.
In a video on Instagram, Zuckerberg stated that they would focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying policies, and enhancing free expression. He specified that fact-checkers would be replaced by community notes in the U. S.
During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Zuckerberg shared that Facebook faced immense pressure to censor information regarding Donald Trump and the Covid pandemic. He noted that this pressure peaked during the Biden administration when the vaccine rollout was underway. Zuckerberg expressed that there were attempts to suppress valid discussions about vaccine side effects.
Elon Musk made similar changes on his platform, X, implementing a community notes system before Zuckerberg's announcement. Biden will serve for 10 more days before Donald Trump takes office.
