House of Representatives Passes Bill for Automatic Military Draft Registration of Young Men Between 18 and 26

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025, H.R. 8070. This amendment, proposed by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), would automatically register all draft-age male U.S. residents with the Selective Service System for a possible military draft, based on information from other federal databases. This would replace the current system where young men decide whether or not to sign up for the draft.

The amended bill states that every male citizen between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six shall be automatically registered, with some exceptions. The bill was approved in the House with a vote of 217 to 199, with 211 Republicans supporting the measure and 196 Democrats voting against it.

Among the provisions in the NDAA is the largest military pay raise in history. The bill also includes three amendments from Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) that address NATO funding, arctic security, and mitigating American military data from being shared with Communist China.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA), Thomas Massie (KY), and Matt Rosendale (MT) were the only Republicans to vote against the bill. Greene defended her decision, stating her opposition to the war in Ukraine and the mandatory annual funding requirement for the foreign war in the NDAA.

The bill now advances to the Senate for further deliberation.
