Blue State Dems Throw Wrench In Plan To Extend Life Of Zero Emission Power Plant

The Democratic-controlled California Senate and Assembly have opposed a loan to extend the lifespan of the state’s last nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon. The proposed $400 million loan, pushed by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, would keep the plant open until 2030. Nuclear energy produces no carbon emissions, and Diablo Canyon provides 9% of California’s energy.

Opponents of the loan, including Democratic lawmakers, cite estimates that keeping the plant open could cost $12 billion. Pacific Gas & Electric, the plant’s operator, argues the extension will cost $8.3 billion and is worthwhile. The legislature’s move contradicts Newsom’s goal of increasing the proportion of California’s energy from renewable sources to 100% by 2045.

Newsom previously opposed extending Diablo Canyon's lifespan but changed his position due to concerns about blackouts. The Department of Energy approved a $1.1 billion credit payment to keep the plant open, concluding it complies with environmental regulations. Despite the lack of carbon emissions, environmentalist groups oppose the loan.

Newsom is pursuing other ways to reduce emissions, such as banning gas-powered cars by 2035 and investing in solar and wind energy. However, many solar companies now face bankruptcy. The California governor’s office did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
