On a early morning in mid-December 2009, I started out on a trip to drive up the California coast on Highway 1. Leaving Chattanooga and driving down Interstate 59, my journey would take me to Meridian Mississippi where I picked up Interstate 20. Driving all through the day I proceeded own through Dallas, Texas, then to El Paso, Texas on Interstate 10. After driving all night my first stop on the trip was in Joshua tree national Park but that's another story which I will come back to later.

After touring through Joshua tree I proceeded up to Barstow California and spent the night in a motel for some much needed rest. The next morning proceeded on to Bakersfield. I picked up Highway 46 and drove through some of California's oil fields and had to stop and watch as these big machines pump crude from the ground.

Next came the Almond country. The nuts were not in season but it was time to prune the trees. In this day of mechanization, I found it very interesting in the way they trim the trees. A tractor with a large boom and a bush hog on the end, trimmed the tree tops.

I ended up running into the Pacific Ocean near Cambria. As you drive up the coast there is always something wondrous to see. The highway veers from the coast quite a bit, so it's a must to stop and get out and look around. I almost missed this family of sea lions sunning themselves on a secluded cove.
