Watchdog concludes Biden risked security by letting millions overstay visas, including threats

A recent report from the Department of Homeland Security's internal watchdog highlights significant security risks posed by the Biden administration's handling of nonimmigrant visa overstays.

Visa Overstays: The report reveals that over 3.1 million foreigners have overstayed their nonimmigrant visas, with over 104,000 of these individuals assessed as potential threats to national security.

Limited Investigations: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) initiated just 496 investigations regarding these overstays and made only eight arrests from fiscal years 2021 to 2024.

Policy Changes: A September 2021 policy shift emphasized that ICE should only focus on "Priority 1" leads, which are the most dangerous individuals. Out of 1,769 such leads, only 84 investigations began, resulting in two arrests. Meanwhile, over 3 million leads were classified as Non-Priority.

Recommendations: The Inspector General urged ICE to create a plan to increase investigations and enforcement actions against those violating visa terms.

The findings underscore a critical gap in U.S. immigration enforcement and national security, prompting recommendations for improved action against visa overstayers, especially those identified as security risks. The Trump administration has shown agreement with the report's conclusions.
