The Trump administration has found widespread fraud among sponsors of unaccompanied migrant children released during former President Biden's term, according to a memo from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Over 450,000 unaccompanied migrant children entered the U.S. during Biden's presidency, with 99% of sponsor applications approved from October 2023 to September 2024.
Upon reviewing the situation, the Trump administration discovered a backlog of 65,000 unanswered fraud reports, including those submitted by children.
About 1,669 sponsor fraud reports were received, with 77% involving intentional document fraud. Investigators found forged IDs, misleading identities, and undisclosed household members.
There were alarming cases where children were placed with inadequately vetted sponsors, leading to severe abuses, including a girl's assault by a man who falsely claimed to be her brother.
A report from 2024 indicated that 291,000 children had not received immigration court notices, revealing significant failures in the sponsorship system, prompting Trump administration investigations.
These findings highlight serious concerns regarding the safety and oversight of unaccompanied migrant children released to sponsors during the Biden administration, fueling ongoing investigations into past sponsorship practices.
