The Trump Administration is introducing a new educational scholarship program aimed at enhancing school choice for families and students. This initiative, known as the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (FSTC), allows taxpayers to receive tax credits for donations made to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) that provide scholarships.
The FSTC program permits individual taxpayers to claim up to $1,700 in tax credits for cash contributions to SGOs, with married couples able to claim up to $3,400.
SGOs will fund scholarships for various educational expenses, such as tuition, tutoring, and supplies, potentially benefiting millions of students.
The launch of the FSTC is set for January 1, 2027, with 30 states already participating. The program encourages states to provide more options for students and families.
The credit is nonrefundable, meaning it can reduce tax bills but not generate refunds. Unused credits can be carried forward for five years.
There are concerns about the program favoring wealthier areas over low-income regions, as analysis suggests higher potential funding in affluent counties.
The FSTC program aims to expand educational opportunities and empower families by providing tax incentives for donations to SGOs. While the initiative has the potential to support millions of students, equitable access across different income regions remains an important consideration.
