The Social Security Administration (SSA), under President Trump, is undertaking a significant clean-up of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) to enhance the accuracy of its records. This initiative aims to improve government services and prevent fraud in federal programs.
The SSA Commissioner, Frank Bisignano, emphasized the importance of accurate SSN records for integrity in government services.
This initiative is the largest of its kind by the SSA, correcting approximately 15% of active SSNs, amounting to about 50 million corrections for 330 million American citizens.
The task included adding 17 million records of deceased individuals and updating 25 million records related to US citizenship.
The SSA is also correcting 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship statuses and has updated its data entry system to manual to prevent future issues.
This clean-up effort aligns with the Trump administration's goal of improving efficiency in government, similar to private sector initiatives led by figures like Elon Musk.
Additionally, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% increase, or about $75 more per month.
The SSA's clean-up initiative underscores its commitment to maintaining accurate and trustworthy records, which are crucial for effective service delivery and fraud prevention.
