Teachers Unions Spent More Than $930 Million on Political Activism and Lobbying Over Decade, Watchdog Finds

A recent report reveals significant political spending by America's largest teachers unions over the past decade, raising concerns about the use of union dues.

• The National Education Association (NEA) spent over $547 million on political activities from 2016 to 2025, including $458.9 million on lobbying and $88.2 million on advocacy groups.

• The NEA also allocated $116.9 million to its super PAC and $80.2 million to various political intermediaries, complicating transparency for teachers regarding their dues.

• The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) reported $383.2 million in political expenditures during the same period, with $123.35 million sent to outside political groups.

• The AFT's spending supports various political initiatives, including significant elections and policy discussions.

• Both unions are critiqued for expanding their political focus beyond educational priorities.

The findings suggest that union funds are being heavily directed towards political activism rather than traditional educational goals.
