Pentagon Sends 600 Soldiers Into Latin America as Trump Turns Up Heat on Cartels

A battalion of 600 troops from the 10th Mountain Division is deploying from Fort Drum, New York, to Latin America as part of the Pentagon's efforts to combat drug trafficking.

The troops will begin training at a jungle warfare facility in Panama and will later train partner forces in Colombia and Honduras.

They may support special operations forces in military actions against drug traffickers.

Several hundred additional soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division will help operate a new command center in Miami focused on the Western Hemisphere.

The United States Southern Command confirmed that details of the deployment are not disclosed due to security concerns.

This deployment is part of a larger strategy to increase U.S. counter-cartel actions, which includes recent operations in partnership with Ecuadorian law enforcement.

On October 2, 500 troops were deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border, and Reaper drones have been redeployed from Africa to South America.

Historically, Latin America has not been a key focus for the U.S. military, allowing China to increase its influence in the region, as highlighted by General Joseph A. Ryan.

The increased military presence in Latin America reflects a shift in U.S. strategy to combat drug trafficking and regain influence in the region amid rising challenges from organized crime and other nations.
