Former Special Counsel Jack Smith has acquired personal payroll data from the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI) as part of his investigation, according to a report by independent journalist Catherine Herridge. This data includes sensitive information about CPI employees’ insurance coverage and bank statements, which appears to exceed the original scope of investigating the January 6 Capitol events.
CPI Vice President Rachel Bovard criticized the invasion of privacy, questioning the relevance of such details to Smith's investigation and claiming it is a misuse of the legal system to target conservatives. Additionally, previous disclosures indicated that CPI was among several conservative organizations targeted by Smith's probe, which included invasive inquiries into their banking and communication records. Recent reports have also shown that Smith obtained personal information of over 639,000 Republican voters and donors, raising concerns about the extent of his investigation.
