Democrats dream big in South Carolina Senate race

The Senate race in South Carolina is attracting unusual attention this year, with Democrats believing they might have a chance to win. This is notable as Democrats haven't won a Senate seat in the state since 1998.

The current Republican incumbent, Sen. Darline Graham, is new to politics and has not generated significant public engagement during her campaign.

Democratic nominee, Annie Andrews, is seen as having an opportunity because she is running against a political novice rather than an established incumbent.

Jaime Harrison, a former DNC chair, has expressed enthusiasm about the election environment for Democrats, citing Graham's lack of campaign activity.

Chip Felkel, a Republican strategist, notes the difficulty but acknowledges a "perfect storm" might be forming that could help Democrats.

Graham’s campaign spokesperson argues that Andrews is misleading voters and portrays her as the most liberal candidate to seek office in South Carolina.

The race has been impacted by the unexpected death of Lindsey Graham in July, which led to a primary that left some Republicans discontented and has resulted in a write-in campaign for Rep. Ralph Norman.

Polls indicate a close race, with Andrews making gains among younger voters and some Republican supporters.

There are concerns about funding levels for Graham's campaign, affecting her visibility.

With the race tightening and various dynamics at play, South Carolina's Senate election has become an unexpected battleground, with both parties vying for potentially crucial votes.
