Communist Cuban Regime Shows its True Colors at the United Nations

On October 27th, Mike Waltz, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, spoke to the UN General Assembly about the serious human rights violations in Cuba since Fidel Castro's regime began. This speech occurred during the Assembly's annual debate on a resolution to end the longstanding U.S. economic embargo against Cuba.

• Disruption During Speech: The Cuban delegation, led by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, attempted to interrupt Ambassador Waltz's speech. Rodríguez Parrilla accused him of lying, leading to a heated exchange. Waltz firmly responded, asserting his right to speak freely in the U.S. and denouncing the Cuban government's intimidation tactics.

• Physical Altercation: Tensions escalated when a member of Cuba's mission physically confronted an American delegate who was recording the incident. Ambassador Waltz stated that consequences would follow for any assaults on Americans in the U.S.

• Cuban Government's Corruption: Waltz highlighted how the Cuban leaders have profited immensely while the population suffers in poverty. He emphasized the disparity between the elite living luxuriously and the everyday struggles of ordinary Cubans.

• Clarification on Trade Restrictions: Waltz rejected the idea that a U.S. military blockade hampers aid to Cuba. He pointed out that Cuba receives shipments from various countries, including the U.S. itself.

• Message to Cuba: Waltz urged the Cuban government to release political prisoners, stop exploiting its citizens, and clarify what they have done with state funds. He advised other ambassadors not to support Cuba in a way that could be seen as a validation of its human rights abuses.

• General Assembly Vote: Ultimately, the General Assembly approved the resolution calling for an end to the U.S. embargo against Cuba. However, support for this resolution decreased significantly, receiving the lowest backing in decades with 130 votes for, 17 against, and 25 abstentions.

Despite some reduction in support, the UN General Assembly's continuation of this resolution reflects ongoing global complexities regarding Cuba's regime and its human rights record.
