College Students Believe in Free Speech—Just Not on Campus

A recent survey by the Buckley Institute highlights college students' evolving attitudes towards free speech, the Constitution, and social issues. While optimism about constitutional values has risen, concerns regarding free expression on campuses persist.

• Support for Constitutional Values: A significant 73% of students now believe the Constitution is a "very important document," a noticeable increase from 49% in 2022. Furthermore, 87% see the First Amendment as vital in today's society.

• Mixed Views on Free Expression: Despite their positive perceptions of liberties, students display tendencies toward censorship. Nearly 49% favor speech codes regulating communication on campuses, and 40% believe "offensive speech" should be criminally prosecuted, showing a notable rise from previous years.

• Intimidation and Debate Culture: A considerable number of students feel intimidated in expressing differing views, with 54% feeling pressured by professors and 53% by classmates. Additionally, 46% think it's acceptable to disrupt campus speakers, highlighting a troubling protest culture.

• Political Ideologies: In ideological leanings, 42% of students prefer socialism over capitalism, while 47% believe that socialist countries offer better economic models than capitalist ones. Views on international issues skew more favorable towards Palestine over Israel, with a significant portion also believing in America's ties to white supremacy.

• Hope for the Future: Despite the challenges, 65% of students express pride in being American, and 42% are optimistic about the nation's future.

While there is growing recognition of constitutional rights among students, the survey underscores a troubling inclination toward restrictions on free speech and an overwhelming preference for socialist ideologies. To foster a healthier educational environment, higher education leaders must instill a commitment to open debate and diverse viewpoints, recognizing that true support for free speech cannot coexist with censorship.
