President Donald Trump has proposed a 250-foot "Triumphal Arch" near Arlington National Cemetery that will also function as a military complex.
The arch will include provisions for drones, snipers, and ammunition, claiming it is necessary for national security.
Trump stated that the changes to the project were requested by the U.S. military, although the Pentagon has not confirmed this.
The site is located between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
A group of Vietnam War veterans is contesting the project, stating it needs congressional approval and would obstruct views of Arlington National Cemetery.
The Trump administration has acknowledged that the project will negatively impact the area but believes this cannot be avoided due to the arch's location.
This announcement follows similar security-focused claims regarding renovations at the White House.
