A new migrant caravan, consisting of hundreds of people mainly from Central America, has begun its journey toward the U.S.-Mexico border. This development marks the first significant caravan movement in quite some time, particularly since stricter border measures were implemented.
The caravan, named "Fe y Esperanza" (Faith and Hope), started on September 20, 2026, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with initial reports claiming between 200 to 400 migrants.
By September 28, the caravan had grown to over 600 migrants, including individuals from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Haiti.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued warnings regarding the caravan, emphasizing that under President Trump, significant efforts have been made to secure the border.
Trump's administration declared a national emergency at the southern border upon returning to office in January 2025, leading to a sharp decline in border crossings. Data from DHS reported merely 8,870 apprehensions in August 2026, marking a 94% drop from the monthly average during the Biden administration.
Migrants are primarily citing economic hardship as their reason for leaving their home countries. Many express awareness that crossing into the U.S. will be difficult, yet they remain determined.
The Trump administration's policies have reportedly reduced the backlog of immigration cases and eased the pressure on cities receiving migrants.
There are claims that the current caravan is primarily made up of economic migrants rather than legitimate asylum seekers.
As this new migrant caravan progresses toward the U.S. border, it challenges existing border policies established by the Trump administration. Although many migrants are motivated by economic needs, the strict enforcement measures have altered the landscape of migration to the United States, showing a significant decrease in unauthorized crossings.
