Nearly One-Third of College Students Say Violence Is ‘Acceptable’ to Silence Political Opponents

 A recent survey conducted by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) highlights concerning attitudes among American college students regarding the use of violence to silence political opponents. The study surveyed 63,000 students across 262 colleges, revealing significant support for violent and disruptive tactics against opposing views.

1. Acceptance of Violence:

About 30% of college students believe that violence is acceptable in some cases to prevent opposing political views from being expressed. This is a slight decline from 34% the previous year.

3% of students said violence is "always acceptable," while 12% felt it is "sometimes acceptable." Another 15% marked it as "rarely acceptable," indicating some support for political violence.

2. Disruption of Speakers:

A larger percentage, 69%, of students consider it acceptable to disrupt a speaker without resorting to violence. Of these, 5% believe shouting down speakers is "always acceptable," and 30% said it is "sometimes acceptable."

3. Difficulty in Political Discussions:

Students reported challenges in having open discussions about political topics, notably President Donald Trump and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Opinions were evenly split on whether such discussions were difficult.

4. Campus Climate:

The survey indicates a campus environment where many students feel justified in silencing speakers they oppose. This is particularly notable in light of the recent assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, raising concerns about escalating political hostility.

5. Views on Controversial Speakers:

A majority of respondents expressed that universities should not allow speakers who advocate for positions such as making abortion illegal. Among "very liberal" students, 72% opposed allowing such speakers.

Despite a slight decrease in outright support for political violence among college students, a significant portion still believes that silencing opposing views, whether through disruption or violence, can be justified. The findings reflect a troubling trend in attitudes toward free expression in American higher education.
