The town of Islip has approved the establishment of an all-boys Muslim school in Bay Shore.
Originally, the school was proposed to include dormitory facilities for 120 students.
Residents expressed strong opposition to the boarding aspect, citing proximity to a senior living community and the school's location in a residential area.
The town's zoning board reversed a previous decision, ruling that the boarding component is not a permitted use under the town's zoning code.
The school will be allowed to open as a day school, meaning students will attend classes but must go home at the end of the day.
