Recent disclosures reveal that Special Counsel Jack Smith seized nearly 5,000 personal checks from individuals who donated to President Donald Trump. This information came to light during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing led by Chair Chuck Grassley.
Smith's team acquired 4,782 checks from Trump donors between September 2019 and August 2023.
The checks were obtained through subpoenas and included sensitive information such as donors' bank account details, signatures, and home addresses.
The subpoenas targeted individuals across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Donations collected varied in size, with some checks as small as $5 and others up to $1,000.
Grassley criticized Smith's actions as unjustified, arguing that the checks were not relevant to his investigation. He emphasized that the Justice Department and FBI now have personal information on thousands of donors.
Additionally, Smith's team allegedly gathered communications from The Federalist, a media outlet, as part of this investigation.
Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, expressed concern over which journalists were targeted and emphasized that the outlet has a history of exposing what they term "Deep State corruption."
The Federalist's Editor-in-Chief, Mollie Hemingway, confirmed that her communications were also seized and denounced this as misconduct.
The actions taken by Special Counsel Jack Smith to obtain personal information from Trump donors and communications from media outlets have raised concerns over privacy and the limits of investigations. The Federalist is exploring legal options in response to these actions.
