Federal regulators have initiated the review and permitting process for two significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects on the Texas coast, which includes the expansion of an existing plant and a potential new facility.
Projects Overview: The two projects include the Port Arthur LNG North Project in Jefferson County and the Coastal Bend LNG Project in San Patricio County. They aim to add a combined capacity of 46.2 million tons of LNG for export.
Capacity Expansion: Houston-based Sempra Infrastructure plans to increase capacity by 27 million tons annually at its facility near Beaumont, almost doubling its current production. Coastal Bend LNG LLC intends to add liquefaction trains at the Enbridge Ingleside Energy Center to produce 19.2 million tons annually.
Global Demand: Sempra has stated that global demand for LNG is predicted to exceed supply in the early 2030s, prompting the need for this expansion.
Environmental Considerations: The Coastal Bend LNG project plans to use carbon capture and sequestration technology to minimize emissions. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has issued a draft Environmental Impact Statement to facilitate a separate expansion at the Corpus Christi LNG site.
Regulatory Progress: Both projects have received approval for expedited regulatory review under Title 41 of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act. The Coastal Bend LNG developers plan to submit a formal application by March 2027, while Sempra aims for a July 2027 filing.
The review of these significant LNG projects reflects increasing efforts to meet global energy demands while prioritizing environmental standards. The progress on these projects indicates a strong push for expanding LNG export capacity along the Texas Gulf Coast.
