Manjit Singh Bedi, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from India, was recently arrested by Punjab Police in Jalandhar, India. He was on the FBI's Most Wanted Fraudsters list due to his alleged involvement in a fraud scheme related to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
Bedi operated the Asian Grocery Store in Tacoma, Washington, authorized to accept SNAP benefits.
Authorities say he defrauded the U.S. government of over $600,000 from March 2024 to June 2025 by processing EBT transactions and giving cash to recipients instead of groceries.
The scheme involved SNAP recipients providing their EBT cards and PINs to Bedi in exchange for cash, allowing Bedi to profit by keeping half of the SNAP benefits.
He was indicted in April 2026 on charges of wire fraud and SNAP benefits fraud, each carrying a potential 20-year prison sentence.
Bedi failed to comply with court conditions and fled to Canada, then to India. A federal warrant was issued for his arrest in May 2026.
His arrest in India ties to a local legal case, and the FBI is coordinating with multiple agencies to secure his return to the U.S. to face charges.
Bedi's arrest highlights a successful initiative by the FBI to capture high-value fraud targets, emphasizing accountability for fraud against American taxpayers.
