The Department of Justice (DOJ) has expanded its investigation into rising beef prices, targeting eight major U.S. grocery retailers. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Trump Administration to reduce grocery costs for Americans.
Retail beef prices increased significantly, with an average rise of 9.4% from July 2025 to July 2026, and ground beef prices alone jumped by 9%.
The DOJ’s Antitrust Division is looking into the pricing strategies of eight grocery chains, including Kroger, Walmart, and Aldi, in response to concerns about affordability.
Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. sent letters to these retailers, emphasizing the rising beef prices as a serious concern for the public.
The letters request data on retail prices, wholesale purchases, costs, margins, and market analyses relevant to beef pricing.
The increase in beef prices is attributed to factors like droughts in cattle-producing areas, which have decreased pastureland and raised feed costs, leading ranchers to reduce their herds.
The limited supply of cattle, combined with high production costs, continues to push beef prices higher despite steady consumer demand.
