Virginia Attorney General creates unit to challenge federal actions

Virginia’s Attorney General, Jay Jones, has established a new unit aimed at challenging federal government actions that may overstep legal boundaries and negatively impact Virginia's interests.

Formation of the Unit: The Federal Accountability Unit will consist of four attorneys and is intended to provide permanent staff for tackling federal actions deemed inappropriate.

Leadership: The unit will be led by Deputy Solicitor General Megan Keenan and will operate within both the Office of the Solicitor General and the Civil Litigation Division.

Scope of Work: The unit will focus on various issues, including federal funding, elections, health care, immigration policies, environmental protection, consumer rights, tariffs, and economic policies. They may also address federal workforce reductions associated with the Department of Government Efficiency.

Legal Actions: The unit is empowered to pursue legal action on behalf of Virginia, advocate for the state’s interests, and collaborate with attorneys general from other states on broader litigation against federal policies.

Recruitment: Job postings for hiring attorneys for the unit have been released, with salaries ranging from $105,000 to $148,000. The application deadline is September 8, and positions allow for remote work in various locations in Virginia.

Attorney General's Focus: Since taking office in January, Jones has prioritized challenging federal actions, participating in cases related to tariffs and election oversight among others, and emphasizing the importance of defending Virginians against federal overreach.

The creation of the Federal Accountability Unit reflects Attorney General Jay Jones's commitment to protecting Virginia's interests by actively responding to federal actions and taking legal measures when necessary.
