Charges Filed: Zhu Chen, his nephew Jiayi Chen, and Jianjun Lu face accusations of forced labor, conspiracy to commit forced labor, and alien harboring.
Allegations: The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims that the defendants recruited Chinese workers on false promises of employment with B-1 and L-1 visas.
Working Conditions: Migrant workers reportedly worked 12-hour shifts under dangerous conditions, receiving less pay than promised. They faced threats of violence and deportation if they did not comply.
Living Conditions: Workers lived in overcrowded and unsanitary apartments controlled by the defendants, limiting their freedom to choose housing.
Vulnerability: Some workers were in the U.S. unlawfully, making them more susceptible to coercion.
The case underscores the issue of foreign worker exploitation in the U.S. and the government's intention to tackle labor trafficking. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg emphasized the need to protect victims and dismantle such networks, reflecting ongoing concerns about protecting both foreign and local workers in the labor market.
