TikTok, along with its parent company ByteDance, has agreed to a significant $400 million settlement in response to a federal lawsuit regarding violations of U.S. children’s online privacy laws.
The settlement was announced by the Department of Justice (DOJ) following allegations that TikTok violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Allegations claimed TikTok collected data from young users without getting parental consent and allowed children to create accounts and interact with adults since 2019.
The lawsuit originated from an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and was formally filed by the DOJ in 2024.
TikTok has pledged to implement changes to improve parental controls and user safety for younger audiences.
