On Monday, the Supreme Court permitted the Trump administration to continue its effort to restrict mail-in voting through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). A ruling of 6-3 overturned a previous injunction against Trump's executive order.
The Court ruled that the over 20 Democrat-led states that sued did not have standing because it was uncertain how the administration would carry out the order.
The unsigned opinion stated, “The Order itself does not harm the States,” indicating that the district court did not have the authority to stop the implementation.
The case involves Trump’s executive order aimed at ensuring only eligible U.S. citizens can vote by mail, which includes creating stricter rules for states.
Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued that the courts should not intervene yet, as the agencies involved were still determining how to implement the order effectively.
The injunction was criticized as premature since the agencies were still in the planning phase.
The Supreme Court's decision allows the Trump administration to pursue its mail-in voting restrictions, leaving the legality of future actions open to interpretation and further legal challenges.
