Socialist NY Lawmaker Says People Should Not Be Arrested for Stealing Basic Necessities

Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher from New York has sparked controversy by suggesting that individuals who steal essential items like toothpaste and soap should not face arrest. Her comments were made during a progressive event in Manhattan.

Gallagher argues that stealing basic necessities stems from poverty, stating that those who steal these items are in need.

She criticized the criminal justice system for protecting large corporations, such as CVS and Walgreens, over low-income residents.

On social media, she reiterated that no one should be jailed for stealing inexpensive necessities.

Her statements contrast with New York's bail laws, which typically allow individuals charged with petit larceny (theft of items valued under $1,000) to be released while awaiting trial.

Criticism from former NYPD Chief Robert Boyce suggests that reducing enforcement of shoplifting could lead to increased disorder, particularly from repeat offenders.

Gallagher's position faced backlash from Republican officials, including Councilwoman Joann Ariola, who warned that tolerance towards shoplifting could further harm businesses already struggling with high costs.

Gallagher's comments highlight a debate over poverty, criminal justice, and business rights in New York, reflecting differing views on how to handle theft of basic items.
