Oklahoma Governor J. Kevin Stitt is advocating for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to be designated as a foreign terrorist organization. This follows actions by other state governors and is based on allegations linking CAIR to terrorism.
On August 12, 2026, Governor Stitt issued an executive order directing state authorities to investigate CAIR, the Muslim Brotherhood, and their affiliates for potential terrorist activities.
Stitt argues that both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood embody ideologies inconsistent with American values of life, liberty, and religious freedom.
Recent actions against CAIR by other governors include Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who designated CAIR as a foreign and domestic terrorist organization, respectively.
Stitt’s order follows claims that CAIR has connections to Hamas and has been involved in election manipulation and misinformation.
The FBI has restricted contact with CAIR since they were named as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a major terrorism-financing case over a decade ago.
Stitt requests the Oklahoma Legislature to pass laws similar to his executive order to further investigate and act against CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Governor Stitt's call for federal action against CAIR follows a trend among some state leaders to classify the organization as a terrorist entity, aiming to address national security concerns linked to perceived terrorist affiliations.
