In the days leading up to the 2020 presidential election, Arizona's Maricopa County experienced a significant breach where a hacker accessed 633,000 voter registration files. Despite the hacker's confession, local and federal prosecutorial agencies decided not to pursue charges.
The breach was noted as the most significant security incident among U.S. cyber logs during the election period.
An unnamed hacker admitted to creating a computer script that exploited vulnerabilities in the county's voter registration systems, allowing access to sensitive data, including information about domestic violence victims and law enforcement.
The FBI conducted a thorough investigation which revealed that the hacker had accessed the system between October 21 and November 2, 2020.
Despite the hacker's admission, various attorney offices, including the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix, declined to press charges, leading to the case's closure in May 2023.
The hacker discovered the vulnerability by entering his voter ID information and subsequently tested the system, discovering how to access different records.
Following the breach, Maricopa County officials claimed that the obtained data included only registration numbers, conflicting with the FBI's findings of over 900 records with sensitive information.
