A new study reveals that marijuana use has exceeded cigarette use in the United States, according to the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
In 2025, 43.8 million Americans aged 12 and older used marijuana regularly, compared to 36.1 million who smoked cigarettes.
The highest number of marijuana users were young adults aged 18 to 25, while cigarette use was most common among adults aged 26 and older.
The survey, involving approximately 60,000 participants, showed that smoking was the primary method of consuming marijuana, followed by edibles and vaping.
Nearly half of U.S. states have legalized either medical or recreational marijuana.
Alcohol remains the most consumed substance, with 129.1 million Americans reporting alcohol use, and 44% of them engaging in monthly binge drinking.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health measures various aspects of substance use and mental health since 1971.
The increasing preference for marijuana over cigarettes reflects changing societal norms, particularly as legalization expands, while alcohol consumption remains predominant among substances used.
