Los Angeles County has introduced a taxpayer-funded housing relief program that allows rent debt to be erased for residents, including illegal immigrants affected by federal immigration enforcement, without requiring them to disclose their immigration status.
The program provides up to $15,000 in housing relief for residents who have experienced a loss of income due to ICE raids, detentions, or deportations.
A special eligibility category was created for households claiming hardship from federal immigration actions, allowing them to apply without revealing their immigration status.
The county has redirected $5 million, originally allocated for wildfire relief, to support this program for illegal immigrants. There is a total fund of $44.367 million available, which also covers wildfire victims.
Applicants may decline to provide documentation related to immigration enforcement and can still qualify for help if they show other economic hardships.
The program does not separate recipients by immigration status, making it difficult for the public to know how many illegal immigrants are benefiting from it.
Demand has greatly exceeded the available funds, leading to 4,587 applications requesting nearly twice the amount budgeted for the program.
