July Jobs Report: Private Sector Adds Jobs, As Government Payrolls Plunge

In July, the U.S. economy experienced a job loss of 23,000, which was unexpected as economists had predicted a gain of 80,000 jobs. This data was provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Job Changes: Private employers added 30,000 jobs, but public sector jobs fell by 53,000 due mainly to seasonal losses in local education.

Unemployment Rate: The unemployment rate stayed at 4.1%, with around 6.9 million Americans unemployed.

Sector Performance:

Local government education saw a significant drop of 50,000 jobs.

Retail trade lost 19,000 jobs, spanning various types of stores.

The healthcare sector added 22,000 jobs, but this number was below its typical monthly increase.

Manufacturing increased by 5,000 jobs, exceeding expectations.

Leisure and hospitality lost 40,000 jobs in July, totaling an 83,000 decline over two months.

Revisions: Job gains for May and June were significantly revised down, decreasing their reported numbers by a combined 103,000 jobs.

Labor Participation: The labor force participation rate remained steady at 61.4%, while the employment-to-population ratio slightly fell to 58.9%. Temporary layoffs rose to 921,000, an increase of 153,000.

Wage Insights

Average hourly earnings were stable at $37.62, showing a year-over-year increase of 3.2%.

The weak job numbers and ongoing geopolitical issues affecting energy prices present a complicated scenario for the Federal Reserve's upcoming decisions. Traders are now pricing in a 56% chance for interest rates to stay the same, although upcoming inflation data could influence this outlook.
