Jacob Smith, a former aide to Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), has switched allegiance to support Democrat James Talarico in his campaign against Republican nominee Ken Paxton for the Texas Senate seat. This shift highlights the growing tensions within the Texas Republican Party.
Smith worked for Cornyn for five years as a deputy legislative director and policy adviser before joining Talarico's campaign as deputy policy director.
In a statement, Smith praised Talarico for focusing on issues important to working Texans rather than on partisan politics.
He criticized Paxton, calling him "the most corrupt, self-dealing politician in Texas," and urged Republicans to vote against him to hold him accountable.
Smith has prior experience working for Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS).
Concerns within the Republican Party about Paxton stem from his past controversies, including a securities fraud case, impeachment by the Texas House, and an extramarital affair.
