How Democrats Botched The Rules To Rig The Election Maps

Virginia Democrats faced setbacks earlier this year in their attempt to change redistricting rules, learning the importance of following constitutional procedures. Maryland Democrats are now facing a similar legal challenge regarding their proposed congressional redistricting amendment.

A Maryland judge, Robert Thompson, ruled that state lawmakers illegally placed a constitutional amendment on the November ballot because they missed the deadline and provided misleading ballot language.

The amendment aimed to remove certain redistricting standards and give the Maryland Supreme Court authority over congressional map challenges.

Similarly, Virginia Democrats attempted to change redistricting rules without adhering to constitutional procedures, leading to their proposal being invalidated by the Virginia Supreme Court.

Both states encountered obstacles due to their constitutions' requirements, which lawmakers attempted to bypass.

The judge criticized the misleading language that described the amendment as merely “clarifying” Maryland’s Constitution and noted that altering different subjects together violated single-subject rules.

The Maryland Supreme Court will review this case after the judge's ruling temporarily removed the amendment from the ballot while an appeal is in process.

These situations in Virginia and Maryland highlight that lawmakers cannot disregard constitutional rules to achieve their political goals. The importance of adhering to established procedures remains crucial, reminding officials that they cannot "break the rules to rewrite the rules."
