From Hijab Try-Ons To Islam Patches, How Mosque-Based Troops Are Embedding “Islamic Values” Into Girl Scout Programs Across America

An investigation has revealed that Girl Scout troops based in mosques across the United States are incorporating Islamic teachings and practices into their programs.

Events at mosques, such as the SALAM Islamic Center, feature activities like hijab try-ons and Quranic instruction, aimed at teaching about Islamic values.

For example, a February 2025 event included learning about hijabs, mosque tours, and a booth on Palestine, without clear communication to parents about the religious content.

The SALAM Islamic Center advertises its participation in Girl Scouts as promoting "Strong Islamic Values," aligning with its educational mission.

Previous activities included a Ramadan sleepover with prayers and discussions, demonstrating the blending of Islamic teachings with Girl Scout principles.

This trend is not unique to SALAM; other mosques nationwide are adopting a similar approach, combining Islamic practices with Girl Scout activities, including special badges related to Islam.

Girl Scouts of the USA has supported these initiatives, promoting the connection between scouting and Islamic education.

The integration of Islamic values within Girl Scout programs reflects a growing trend in private sectarian education efforts within public organizations.
