Everything’s bigger in Texas: Musk’s planned $16.8 billion chip factory is five times bigger than the world’s current largest building

Elon Musk is initiating a significant development for his companies, SpaceX and Tesla, with the construction of Terafab, a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas, covering 100 million square feet, far surpassing any existing building. Currently, the largest is the New Century Global Center in China, at 18.9 million square feet.

The first phase, costing over $16.8 billion, aims to create 3,000 jobs. Terafab intends to unify chip manufacturing processes under one roof, producing over 1 terawatt of computing power annually, vital for future technological needs, particularly for space travel and AI. This project will also support Musk's vision for efficient production and energy use, including a potential fleet of Tesla robots and significant solar power generation. Despite challenges, including a reported loss for SpaceX, Terafab represents Musk's ambitious goals for future technology.
