Education Secretary Linda McMahon has raised serious concerns about the safety of students in American schools. She stated that about one in ten students will face sexual misconduct or abuse by school staff before finishing high school.
McMahon called the statistic "mind-blowing" and vowed that the Trump administration would take strong actions to handle allegations of abuse by teachers and staff.
She pointed to significant systemic failures in state education frameworks, particularly highlighting California for widespread abuse and inadequate enforcement measures.
The statistic aligns with federal research showing that approximately 9.6% of students in grades eight to eleven experience some form of educator sexual misconduct.
McMahon condemned practices like “passing the trash,” where educators accused of misconduct are transferred instead of terminated.
The Department of Education is increasing scrutiny and conducting Title IX investigations, threatening to cut federal funding for schools that do not adequately discipline or report misconduct.
McMahon emphasized that schools receiving federal funds must protect children and ensure that those accused of serious misconduct are permanently removed from educational environments.
