Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has raised strong concerns regarding the Democratic Party's treatment of antisemitism, claiming it has become more hostile towards Jewish Americans. Nessel specifically criticized U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed for not retracting comments that she believes downplayed an attempted attack on a synagogue in Michigan.
Nessel, a Jewish Democrat, discussed her worries on The Atlantic’s "The David Frum Show," noting a rise in antisemitism within the Democratic Party since Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
She mentioned facing death threats related to her Jewish identity but noted a change in hostility that now appears to be coming from multiple sides.
Nessel highlighted El-Sayed’s response to a March 12 attempted attack on Temple Israel, stating his comments might excuse domestic terrorism.
Despite initially condemning the attack, El-Sayed's subsequent statements tied it to U.S.-Israeli military actions, which Nessel found troubling.
Nessel has decided to skip the upcoming Michigan Democratic Party convention due to fears of backlash from party members, citing previous experiences of being heckled.
Other Michigan Democrats, including Mallory McMorrow, have acknowledged antisemitism within the party, demonstrating a broader concern.
Nessel hopes El-Sayed will eventually acknowledge the harm of his comments and publicly retract them, expressing a desire for unity and understanding within the party regarding antisemitism.
